the pinterest promise

lately i have been seeing a ton of posts concerning pinterest etiquette, proper crediting, repinning, pinning with love... any of these topics - you have probably all seen them around too. i love that people in the blogging community are taking a stand against the crazy pinning world and making sure that people are properly crediting where it is due.

but compared to the masses, the blogging community is a minority now that what seems to have been our little secret has gotten out! so i wanted to compile a few of the posts i have read about pinning with love and respect all in one place and then issue a challenge!

first up - the lovely liv lane from choosing beauty has four simple but very direct ways to help keep the integrity behind pinning:

1. be original - credit the link to the original creator!
2. follow the links - even though it might seem like a pain, do a little research to make sure that every pin you repin is linked to the original artist/owner of the image or idea
3. pin the permalink - if you’re pinning an image from a blog, make sure it links to the post it was part of – not just to the blog’s home page.
4. show and tell - if you put a pinterest image on your blog, link back to the original owner of the image & the pin.

click over to her post to read all of it! ;) liv has such a beautiful blog and outlook on life. if you are truly looking for a blog that will lift you up daily then definitely check her out! she also has a great etsy shop full of beautiful artwork.

killer b designs does it right and shares a great image to pin (from the original source, of course) and shares these quick tips:

1. be descriptive in your comment section! use words that describe the project (yarn wrapped letter tutorial instead of CUTE!) or name the recipe (jalapeno popper pull apart bread instead of dude - i'm drooling on my keyboard) so that they are able to be found when searched for.

2. use hashtags - they work the same as they do in twitter!

visit killer b's blog for the full rundown on her pinterest suggestions plus a nice graphic to sum up her points!

the pinterest promise

let's make a promise and help spread the word about it to keep pinterest fun but more importantly to retain the integrity of those pinning and the sources from which all these beautiful pins come!

make the
pinterest promise

i promise to...

pin from the original source, meaning that i will verify the original source when i repin something and if a pin doesn't go to the authentic original source i will find it before i repin it.

properly caption the pin, meaning i will use descriptive words specific to the image and original source instead of generic words.

send people to the source, meaning that i will not post the entire recipe/method/tutorial/idea in the caption and if i repin something that does i will remove this information from the caption and replace it with a proper caption (see previous)

properly promote, meaning that i will not only pin my products to pinterest but i will use pinterest to also promote my favorite handmade shops, online stores, etc.

properly post pins in my blog, meaning i will use the super simple and nifty feature provided by pinterest to embed pins in my posts once i have verified the original source, of course. (click here to see this sweet feature - and my apologies if i am tardy to the pinterest-embedding-feature-party)

if you are making this promise with me, i encourage you to share the badge on your blog! it will link back to this post so that hopefully others will also make the pinterest promise with us and help bring pinterest back to what it was originally meant to be!

psst: you can also pin this image to help spread the word or tweet about this post!

pass it forward
with the shine project

one of the most amazing and fun parts of blogging is what goes on behind the scenes. all of the networking, secret sharing, virtual fist bumps and encouragement through emails, tweets and the like seriously make my heart sing with joy! joining with other blogging forces has the potential to impact the whole world and knowing that me, tiny little me in my tiny little town, can be a part of that seriously gives me chills

what's that you say? you want to get in on some big time action? lucky lucky you... that is exactly what i'm going to share with you - a way that YOU can get in on a seriously amazing and transforming event.

ashley shine

one of the gals who possesses that gene for making BIG things happen is ashley over at the shine project. have you met her? have you been inspired by her lately? i'd be willing to bet the answer is yes but if you haven't then i highly recommend visiting her blog.

she is the mastermind behind spreading all things positive and a workhorse when it comes to getting on her hands and knees to make things shine.

today she is launching something huge. something awesome. something YOU can do to make a big difference in the world!

pass it forward with the shine project

a few words from ashley to tell you what it is about:

pass it forward was designed to get people to do little things, everyday, that makes an impact on the community around them. pass it forward is designed around a card (see below). each card is given a unique identification number. lets say we're at mcdonalds, and I decide to pay for the person behind me in the drive through. i'd give the cashier the card, and tell them to pass it along to the next car when they give them the food that has been paid for. i then go home and log into the website that was on the card, and find my unique ID number. i log into it, and add my information... my first name, city, and a description of what I did....
let's say the person behind me was you, you would pass it forward to someone else, and then would go home and do the same thing. from the very beginning, you will be able to track where your card goes, and how many people you affect just by doing one simple act of kindness.

shine card

note: be sure you have your pop-up blocker turned off when you click over to the website because a nifty set of directions pops up when you open the page!

want to get involved? okay okay! don't everyone jump in at once! head over to the shine project to learn even more about this awesome project, including how you can get a card to get started!

hope you see you there and watch your shine spread all over!!

an LSU baby shower

just the fact that i used the letters "LSU" in the title of a blog post, therefore permanently adding it to internets history forever and ever tied to this blog, will tell you how much i love my friend alina.

because i hate lsu.

today, however, that is neither here nor there. today is a story about how four girls on a plane survived what can only be labeled as "the longest, most interesting, scariest, and loveliest day ever."

after a looong day!
left to right: sarah, alina, beth, me!

this is at the end of the long day i am about to tell you about so that would explain why we all look as wonderful as we do. because everyone looks great after a day of air sickness, crazy shower preparation, delayed flights and late night arrivals, right?

i'm getting ahead of myself.

alina is the guest of honor at the baby shower that i will eventually tell you about. sarah and beth are her sisters-in-law. and for the purpose of the story - beth is also pregnant although not as far along as alina. i am (according to her awesome mom) alina's "dearest friend" which is quite an honor in and of itself.

it involves things like talking about gassy dogs, taking weird pictures on the computer and putting up with husbands who stay up playing video games until 4:45 in the morning. very important job folks. not for the feint of heart.

so chris and i drove down to baton rouge last friday to meet up with our dearest friends and hang out for an evening before the gals took off to dallas. i know it probably seems weird that we drove to baton rouge to get to dallas but the four of us got screaming good deals on tickets so we just hopped on a plane (thinking that would make the trip easier and more enjoyable for the bean-growing-ladies).

wrong.

first of all we were on a pretty small plane. second of all we flew through a storm the entire way. third of all, two of the girls were pregnant. so to put a really long and not all that pretty story short and squeaky clean - the bathroom was pretty much occupied the entire flight. even i, who has never had one bout with motion sickness, got a little woozy. but i didn't get sick thank God. i'm pretty sure he had me there to help take care of the others. also, thank heavens for sarah who had an unending supply of anti-nausea medicine.

do you know how long an hour and fifteen minutes feels when you are nauseated on a plane for the entire trip? it is about eight hours of someone shaking your head around and punching you in the stomach. super fun.

anyways - we did actually make it to dallas and alina's mom picked us up at the airport and drove us to her house where we all rested for a bit before the shower and had a very light lunch. we were all honestly afraid to eat because we knew we would have to fly home again later and we weren't sure what the weather would be like. people started showing up around 12 to start setting up for the shower.

aside from the fact that it was all yellow + purple, it was a beautiful shower and SO much fun! just kidding about the yellow + purple thing alina! kind of. ;)

jared's diaper bag!
daddy's diaper bag

the ladies in charge of games did an excellent job! we had three games for guests to play, none of which required group participation which worked out well.

guess the candy bar
guess the candy bar

for the first game we put different candy in paper bags and put a baby-related clue on the outside. you could shake the bags and feel the candy bars inside to make a guess as to what it was. any ideas on what the candy in this bag is? {hit - it rattles when you shake it and comes in a box}

bowling!
baby bottle bowling

if you've known alina and jared for more than a hot second, it is blatantly obvious they are huge bowlers. even after their lovely wedding they put their bowling shoes on and hit the lanes. (don't believe me? click here) in fact - she is 7 weeks away from delivering a baby and is still bowling every friday. pretty impressive if you ask me. anyways - we had to incorporate bowling of some sort so we put some rice in ten baby bottles and gave everyone three chances at knocking over as many "pins" as possible. i think the highest score out of a possible thirty was fourteen!

diaper notes
diaper notes

probably the most fun little game was the diaper notes "game". i use the term "game" loosely because it is really more of an activity that people can do. we unloaded a box of newborn diapers and left a bowl of markers for everyone to write a sweet, funny (and hey, some were probably inappropriate!) note to jared and alina to make them smile during the two a.m. feed & change sessions. once they were all done we stuffed them back in the box and taped it back up.

a few of the notes:

incoming!
just keep swimming, just keep swimming
that's what she said
#1 of a million

and of course these are my favorites

truth.

clearly i did not write those two totally offensive letters on the left diaper, but did clear up why they were there on the right! ;)

what would sabrina say?

if my mom had been there, this is definitely what she would have written. (click here to see why) and since alina and my mom had a special bond i just had to include it! i know it will make alina laugh when she gets to it.

alina & margaret
alina and margaret

this is alina and her brother's wife margaret. they are somewhere between seven and fourteen days apart in their pregnancy which i think is so cool. if i ever decide to have a baby i really hope and pray i have someone close to me who is also with child so i don't have to go through it alone!

i ended up taking a lot more pictures with alina's camera than i did mine so she has most of them. i'm sure they will be on her blog before long though (hint, hint alina...) so i will direct you guys over there when she posts them so you can see some more pictures!

despite the crazy start to the day, the rest of the evening was very nice. due to the weather and some mechanical problems, our return flight was delayed long enough for us to have a wonderful dinner with her family at a swanky restaurant in dallas called rathbun's blue blate kitchen.

as you probably guessed they have a daily blue plate special but instead of typical diner food they serve things like duck and calamari and other stuff i don't eat.

so here was my dinner.

dinner @ rathbuns2
fried green tomatoes + grits

dude - could i be more southern?? these tomatoes were ah-mazing. probably some of the freshest green tomatoes i have ever had, coated with a perfectly crunchy parmesan breading and topped with some kind of goat cheese spread and a ancho chili honey sauce. the grits were full of roasted poblano peppers and cheese - smoky, spicy, cheesy, creamy and rich. all the food groups in one sweet little cast iron pot!

oh and the random glob on the corner of my plate was a sample of alina's creamy garlic mashed potatoes.

i die.

and lucky for all of us the flight back was heaven-like and totally uneventful. we actually enjoyed ourselves in the non bouncy airplane, with bellies full of yummy food (and zofran.), cameras full of pictures and hearts full of love. we can't wait to meet little spare and snuggle the new baby!!

biggest hill vs. smallest mountain

remember when i told you about flying with la rue a few weeks ago?

copilot!

and i mentioned this hill?

cavanal hill

this is cavanal hill which, according to the local chamber of commerce, is the tallest hill in the world. at 1,999 feet it is one small foot short of being an official mountain. from far away it looks a lot bigger but up close it just looks like another part of the landscape.

as chris and i were leaving oklahoma to head home after the trip, we drove right past cavanal hill and i pointed it out to him. i told him about it and wondered out loud "why someone didn't just go put a pile of dirt that was a foot high on the highest point and call it a mountain already?".

he simply responded "what is so special about being the shortest mountain in the world? wouldn't you rather the the world's tallest hill than the world's shortest mountain?"

hmmm... that made me think.

i love it when chris makes me think!

that simple thought could really be applied to so many areas of our lives. where are you striving to be so good and so "big" at something? should we be happy with our place in lives or should we pile an extra foot of dirt on our heads to fit in with the "bigger and better" folks out there?

just something to make you think today. :)

conflicts.

dude. all this giveaway stuff is seriously going to give me a TOTAL hernia/stomach ulcer/migraine/leg cramps.

for the record:

i love giveaways. i love hosting giveaways. i love entering giveaways. i love the bloggers who host giveaways. if i enter your giveaway - it is because i love YOU and i love what you are giving away or know someone i could gift it to who would love it just as much as me.

and now for the "holy crap what the heck do i do now????" question:

facebook recently started cracking down on using them as a platform/method of entering or administering giveaways.

(for the full blown technical jargon list of rules click here or you can click here and have someone explain it to you in real life terms)

so you all know i have a shabby apple dress giveaway happening right now and part of their mandatory list of things i must do in order to host one is have you guys "like" their facebook page in order to enter.

in case you didn't read the articles - the main thing is this is clearly a BIG facebook no-no and can cause facebook to delete my blog page and shabby apples' blog page as well.

so now i'm trying to figure out if i should remove that as an entry to keep me and shabby apple from getting in trouble. i have an email in to shabby apple for clarification. i don't know what will happen but i will proceed as fairly as i possibly can to make sure none of the entries are disqualified and that anyone new who enters the contest has the same chance of winning as the others.

i will definitely keep you guys posted! sorry about all this. :(

(also - unless shabby apple wises up and changes their methods, which hopefully they will, i will not be hosting any more giveaways for them... which sucks because I LOVE SHABBY APPLE. i'm so conflicted. UGH)

February 18, 2012

come meet my hubs!

we were driving down to baton rouge yesterday and on a whim i decided to introduce you guys to my hubby!

we are silly. :)
